St. Louis – Maplewood firefighter Ryan Hummert will be honored with a candlelight vigil tonight, on the anniversary of his death.
The 22-year-old rookie was killed by a man who set his vehicle on fire and then shot at emergency responders. Two police officers were wounded, and the shooter committed suicide.
Maplewood Fire Chief Terry Merrell said Hummert's youthful enthusiasm was an inspiration to everyone in the department.
"Ryan was just an incredibly positive human being," Merrell said. "For me, the best thing I could say about someone is that they were a genuinely good person."
The service will begin at 8 p.m. at Ryan Hummert Memorial Park in Maplewood .
