Chicago – With a deadline looming, federal prosecutors could unveil an indictment as early as today charging former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich with political corruption.
U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald has until Tuesday to produce a grand jury indictment that would replace the criminal complaint against Blagojevich.
While the federal government never announces the time and place of grand jury meetings, today is believed to be the last meeting before the deadline.
Fitzgerald could ask a judge for another deadline extension. But all signs point to an imminent indictment.
Meanwhile, Blagojevich appears to be at Walt Disney World. He and his family apparently are staying at Disney's Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
A phone call connected by a hotel operator to a room booked under Blagojevich went straight to voicemail. A message left there and for Blagojevich's publicist Glenn Selig were not immediately returned Thursday.
Blagojevich's Dec. 9 arrest ended his political career. The Illinois House impeached him a month later, and the state Senate convicted Blagojevich and removed him from office January 29.
Among other things, he's accused of scheming to sell Barack Obama's U.S. Senate seat. The former governor denies any wrongdoing.
