St. Louis – AmerenUE officials said a scam artist is calling customers and threatening to turn off their electricity if they do not pay late bills immediately.
The caller has been demanding credit card and bank account information.
Senior Vice President Richard Mark said several dozen customers contacted AmerenUE this week after receiving suspicious calls.
He said someone appears to be dialing at random, and no customer data have been compromised.
"There's no indication that the person making these calls has any information about the customers' personal account whatsoever," Mark said.
Mark said AmerenUE gives late payers three weeks to settle old bills, and sends notifications by mail.
He said anyone who gets a suspicious call should contact the company at 1-800-552-7583.
