Missouri senators support auto bailout

By KWMU staff

St. Louis – Missouri's congressional delegation generally voted along party lines Wednesday as the House passed a $14 billion dollar loan package for the auto industry.

All four Democratic Representatives voted in favor of the measure; The Republicans all voted no, except for Jo Ann Emerson of Cape Girardeau.

The measure now moves to the Senate.

Kit Bond of Missouri is one of the few Republicans in that chamber who supports a bailout.

"I think there will be a domino effect if we break the manufacturing backbone of middle America, which is the auto industry," Bond said "It's going to take a long time to put that economy back together."

Bond said the failure of the American auto industry could cost 220,000 jobs in Missouri.

Democrat Claire McCaskill also supports a bailout. She said the auto companies are making a good faith effort to downsize and retool.
