Jefferson City, MO – Students at Can! Academies of St. Louis will have to find another school to attend this fall.
The State Board of Education has voted to suspend the charter school's operations for at least one year.
Jocelyn Strand is Director of "A" Plus and Charter Schools for the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
She says the atmosphere at Can! Academies was chaotic for both teachers and students.
"There were a number of issues this year...part of it is just that they also didn't anticipate getting so many 17 to 21 year olds who were reading at a 3rd grade level," Strand said.
Strand added that she hopes a revised plan will be crafted that will allow the charter school to reopen its doors in 2009.
Can! Academies was created to give high school dropouts a chance to finish their education.
