Hi-Pointe theater to shut down temporarily

By Matt Sepic, KWMU

St. Louis – The Hi-Pointe theater in St. Louis' Dogtown neighborhood is closing tonight, but the owner says it will reopen in a few weeks.

After tonight's 9:15 showing of Run Fat Boy Run, the Hi-Pointe will go dark.

The Hi-Pointe first opened in 1922, and George James bought it in 1977.

Landmark Theaters has operated it for the past few years, but decided not to renew its lease.

James said he's in talks with another operator. Though no deal has been signed yet, he said the theater should reopen in about three weeks.

He said a projector upgrade is needed, and he also wants to get a liquor license.

The Hi-Pointe is the oldest continuously operating theater in St. Louis.
