Fairmont City, Ill. – Police and firefighters in the Metro East community of Fairmont City are working to raise money to cover the funeral costs of four people killed in a trailer fire.
The blaze on Tuesday killed 24-year-old Olivia Jarillo-Gomez, her two young children and her uncle. Her husband escaped through a window.
Police Chief Scott Penny said the family moved in over the weekend, without having the home inspected as required by local ordinance.
The chief said the back door could have allowed many of the victims to escape but was covered by vinyl siding. There's no word yet on what caused the fire.
Donations may be made to the Fairmont Police Department or to the Gomez Family Burial Fund set up at the local C.T. Community Credit Union.
