St. Louis – Salman Rushdie was already a well-established writer when he published "The Satanic Verses" nearly twenty years ago.

The book offended many Muslims for its depiction of the Prophet Mohammed, and Iran's Ayatollah Khomeini condemned the author to death.

As a consequence, Rushdie spent much of the 1990s in hiding. But now he's on the lecture circuit, and he'll be in town Thursday (2/28/08) for Maryville University's St. Louis Speakers Series.

Rushdie says while he wants to put the Satanic Verses incident behind him and work on new books, it's something that's not easy to forget. He spoke with KWMU's Matt Sepic.
