JEFFERSON CITY, MO – A bill in the Missouri House seeks to reduce so-called "light pollution" and make stars in the sky more visible at night.
Reducing so-called "light pollution" is the goal of a bill in the Missouri House.
The sponsor, Republican House Member Walt Bivins of St. Louis, says it would require the Department of Natural Resources to monitor the amount of artificial light at night in rural protected areas:
"Like some of the Missouri state parks and historic sites, particularly where they have overnight camping, wilderness areas, scenic river ways, those types of places to, over a period of time, to phase in lighting, such that we won't have the light pollution, as it were."
Bivins suggests the use of fewer lights in general and replacing older light bulbs with newer light-emitting diodes can improve nighttime visibility and save energy.
