St. Louis, MO – The mayor of Kirkwood continues to improve at a local hospital as he recovers from gunshot wounds he suffered in the city hall shooting rampage last week.
Mike Swoboda, 69, is now listed in serious condition and he remains in intensive care. Former city council member and family friend Tom Noonan says Swoboda is improving each day.
"This morning we just saw him and he smiled at my daughter Sarah and that was very uplifting. He's looking around. He's shaking hands to some extent and is just continuing with his recovery."
Noonan says the mayor suffered a concussion when he was shot twice in the head by Charles Thornton. Swoboda remains on a ventilator and feeding tube much of the time. But he has been sitting in a chair and spending more time awake. Six others were shot by Thornton on February 7th. Five of them were killed.
