Petroleum truck overturns on I-270; driver killed

By Maria Hickey, KWMU

St. Louis, MO. – A petroleum truck overturned Thursday morning on Interstate 270 killing the driver.

Sergeant Julie Scerine with the Missouri Highway Patrol said Thursday afternoon that southbound 270 would remain closed for several more hours between 370 and St. Charles Rock Road.

Scerine said the accident happened around 9:15 a.m. when two vehicles stopped to pick up a wheelbarrow that was on the road.

The tractor trailer came along southbound, tried to swerve to avoid the vehicles that were stopped, made slight contact with the rear of one of the trucks and lost control, overturning, resulting in the death of the driver, Scerine said.

Scerine says the truck, owned by Groendyke Transport, was carrying about 7,000 gallons of petroleum.

She says only a small amount spilled on the roadway, and the rest was transferred to another vehicle.
