Alton, Ill. – The lone survivor of a military search-and-rescue helicopter crash last week in Arizona is from the Metro East.
Marine Lance Corporal Brian Stahlhut is in stable condition at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego. He graduated from Alton High School in 2005.
Stahlhut, 21, was flying in a Huey helicopter with four other people on a routine training mission near the Colorado River when the chopper crashed for reasons still unknown.
Stahlhut was a member of Alton High's Air Force Junior ROTC, and he worked as a cook and dishwasher at Alfie's Restaurant in Alton before enlisting in the Marines.
A public memorial service for the four dead servicemen is scheduled for this morning (Wednesday) at the Marine Corps Air Station's chapel in Yuma, Arizona.
