St. Louis, MO – St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay has rejected a request to honor Ike Turner, the legendary rock icon who has publicly admitted hitting his former wife Tina Turner.
Slay was asked to make September 2 "Ike Turner Day" in St. Louis, the same day Turner is scheduled to perform at the Big Muddy Blues Festival.
Turner, 75, was born in Mississippi but later moved to the St. Louis region.
Earlier this spring, he spent a night in jail after he was arrested on a 1989 drug warrant that turned out to be invalid.
In February, Turner won a Grammy for best traditional blues album, which his son produced. "Wow, I really don't know what to say and I'm scared to death," said the rock pioneer, upon winning.
His name is enshrined on the St. Louis Walk of Fame along the Delmar Loop.
