Road work in Illinois will mean more delays on I-64

By Matt Sepic, KWMU

St. Louis – St. Louis-area drivers will see even more lane closures and traffic delays along Interstate 64 this week.

The work is near the Poplar Street Bridge, and is not part of the major highway overhaul.

On the Illinois side, workers will resurface a section of the road from the bridge to Route 203.

However engineer Jeff Church with the Illinois Department of Transportation said crews will not be working during rush hour.

"Even so, we will probably experience 15 to 20 minute delays even in the non-peak hours, just because of the shear volume of traffic that has to go through that construction zone," Church said.

Also, starting Monday night workers in Missouri will close the two right lanes on both east and westbound I-64 between 14th and 18th streets, but only at night.

The crews will be doing more earthquake strengthening work on the elevated road decks. That job is expected to be done by Friday.
