St. Louis, MO – The St. Louis Cardinals return to play tonight (Monday) in Milwaukee after canceling last night's game because of the death of relief pitcher Josh Hancock.
Hancock died instantly when his SUV struck a tow truck that had stopped to help another motorist. It happened early Sunday morning.
There were moments of silence at major league ballparks Sunday to remember Hancock, who turned 29 earlier this month. For the Cardinals, Hancock's number 32 will be sewn onto their shirt-sleeves for tonight's game against the Brewers.
Manager Tony LaRussa says Hancock gained his team's respect for coming into games at the worst times, like he did during a loss on Saturday the Cubs. Hancock pitched three innings, giving up one run.
Fans have been leaving notes and flowers at a temporary memorial at Busch
St. Louis police say there's no indication at this time that alcohol was involved, but the investigation continues. There will be an autopsy today (Monday).
Also, the Post-Dispatch reported Monday that Hancock had just left Mike Shannon's restaurant and declined an offer for a a cab because he told friends he was only going the three blocks to the team's hotel.
The entire team will fly to Mississippi on its off-day Thursday to attend Hancock's funeral.
