Police identify man they shot downtown

By AP/KWMU

St. Louis, MO – St. Louis police say the man two officers shot and killed Tuesday night was Damien Conner of Swansea, Illinois.

The shooting happened, several blocks from Busch Stadium and not long before the Cardinals' game against the New York Mets.

Police Chief Joe Mokwa says the officers were on routine patrol downtown when they saw Conner, 29, and sought to question him about recent auto break-ins. Mokwa says the man started walking away but turned and opened fire.

The officers weren't injured.

Dozens of people witnessed the shootout, and one says he heard ten to 15 shots.

Police say Conner was shot in both shoulders, the chest, back and forehead.
