Bill would ban use of Amyl Nitrite

By Marshall Griffin, KWMU

Jefferson City, MO – A state House member wants to outlaw the recreational use of Amyl Nitrite, a solvent that's sometimes referred to as "Rush" or "Poppers." It can be found at dance clubs, raves, and sex shops, and is often used during sex to enhance pleasure.

But Democratic Representative Jeff Roorda of Jefferson County says Amyl Nitrite is a deadly substance, "Parents sit down...they talk with their kids about not using marijuana, or cocaine, or methamphetamine, and they forget that right under the kid's nose, pardon the pun, there's household items that are available for them to abuse."

Roorda's bill would make it illegal to inhale Amyl Nitrite fumes for getting high, and would make it illegal to market or sell it for that purpose. He says the substance is strong enough to leave a person brain dead after just one use.
