Three charged in Maplewood carjacking

By Matt Sepic, KWMU

St. Louis – Police arrested two more people Tuesday in connection with a carjacking outside a Maplewood Wal-Mart store.

Maplewood Police Sgt. Michael Martin said two of the suspects knew the victim, and one rode with him to the store Monday where the others were waiting.

Martin said Cornell Merritt, Jamie Powell and Alexander Thornton planned the crime several days in advance.

"Two of the three participants were friends of his, one being a female whom he was with that went to the Wal-Mart store [with him]" Martin said. "This was a planned act. This was not something that occurred at random, at the spur of the moment."

Martin said the victim was shot five times, and remains hospitalized in critical but stable condition.

Authorities are not releasing the victim's name at his family's request.

Police arrested the first suspect Monday after he allegedly crashed the victim's SUV following a chase on Highway 40.
