St. Louis – The state of Missouri will host its first ever statewide cycling race next year.

Organizers say the six day race will be similar to those in California and Georgia, and will include professional cycling teams from both this country and abroad.

Lieutenant Governor Peter Kinder said the event will boost the state's tourism industry and promote physical fitness at the same time.

"Too often those of us in government focus only on the fiscal health of our state," Kinder said. "But in this day of Xboxes and Playstations, we need to spotlight the importance of preventative physical health, especially for children and young people."

Planners have not yet chosen the host cities for the race.

The event is scheduled for September 11th through the 16th.
