Heat sizzles Cards fans; nearly 100 seek treatment

By AP/KWMU

St. Louis, MO – Nearly 100 people were treated at Busch Stadium Sunday during the Cardinals' game because of the heat, and at least five went to the hospital.

Temperatures at the stadium exceeded 100 degrees. Earlier this weekend, dozens of concert goers were treated Saturday during Ozzfest at the UMB Bank Pavillion.

More than 60 cooling centers will open today in St. Louis, where temperatures and humidity will make it feel like 115 degrees.

St. Louis-area hospitals have not reported any heat-related deaths, but some treated heat cases Sunday.

St. Louis is under an excessive heat warning expected to last through Friday.

Meanwhile, officials in Illinois said Sunday the state will make $8 million available to help some people pay their energy bills this summer, so they can keep air conditioners on. The grants are meant for seniors, the disabled, and families with small children.
