St. Louis, MO – Today (Tuesday), the March of Dimes will release its annual report card on newborn screening.

It will, among other things, mention that Missouri this year doubled the number of tests it requires by law.

The tests screen for conditions that can be devastating unless simple treatments are made, such as changing the baby's diet.

KWMU's science reporter Robert Frederick has more on the tests and why it took so long to implement this simple, preventative medicine.

Gabe Bullard contributed to this report
