St. Louis – MODOT is spending $3 million to put up new mile markers along Missouri's interstate highways.

Workers will place them every fifth of a mile. They'll replace the existing ones that are a mile apart.

Transportation department spokesman Jeff Briggs said the new signs will have more information to help stranded drivers.

"Now, it will be easy at a glance at any time to confirm what highway you're on and what direction you're going, as well as where you're located," Briggs said. "That would be especially important if for some reason you get stranded by the side of the road and you need some assistance."

Briggs said some of the new markers are already up along I-55 south of St. Louis, and along I-44 in southwest Missouri.

He said MODOT will have them all up by the end of the year.
