George Ryan trial enters 19th week

By AP/KWMU

Chicago, ILL. – George Ryan's defense team will continue on Monday trying to explain why the former Illinois governor always seemed to be carrying wads of cash.

So far, the attorneys have focused on Christmas cards Ryan got as secretary of state and later as governor.

A former employee testified last week that Ryan received between $1,500 and $3,000 in cash from his office employees in a normal Christmas season.

Ryan's lawyers might be telling jurors about the Christmas money to help explain testimony about how Ryan always carried cash but never seemed to visit a bank. But prosecutors immediately tried to make the testimony work for them by making Ryan look greedy.

The trial is entering its 19th week.
