Many call for action on King Day

By Maria Hickey, KWMU

St. Louis, MO. – St. Louis civic and religious leaders called on the participants in the Martin Luther King Junior celebration to keep his dream alive.

Darlene Green, comptroller for the city of St. Louis, spoke to a crowd at the Old Courthouse.

Green asked participants to renew their commitment to fighting for good schools, health care coverage, and safe neighborhoods.

Will the state provide the needed healthcare dollars for our citizens, will our public schools ever improve, will the killing stop? Green asked. Is this the year, 2006, that we can say yes to some of these questions?

The celebration also included a breakfast at the Pavilion Hotel and a march to Powell Hall.
