Blunt sends his own letter to stem cell scientists

By AP/KWMU

Jefferson City, MO – Countering a move made two weeks ago by Illinois' governor, Missouri Governor Matt Blunt on Monday sent a letter to scientists who research embryonic stem cells, reiterating his support for their work.

"I am wholly committed to ensuring that Missouri maintains an environment that not only fosters but also attracts responsible and innovative scientific research," Blunt said in his letter.

Blagojevich's letter, sent late last month, went to 50 scientists and encouraged them to consider moving to that state. Blunt, though, says Blagojevich is wrong in asserting that Illinois is more hospitable to stem cell research.

A Blagojevich spokeswoman says the state of Illinois will invest $10 million in stem cell research and the governor wanted to get the word out.

Blunt supports stem cell research, but many Missouri Republicans do not. Despite their opposition, Missouri lawmakers have not voted to ban the procedure.
