Chicago, Ill. – A rule requiring Illinois pharmacies to fill prescriptions for emergency contraception is very close to being permanent.
A committee on Tuesday that sees such rules through didn't make any objections, which means the rule will become permanent once the paperwork is filed with the Secretary of State's office.
The rule says pharmacists that sell contraceptives must fill prescriptions for emergency contraception.
Governor Rod Blagojevich says women will be able to be confident they will get their medication for birth control quickly without questions or lectures.
Six Illinois pharmacists have sued the governor for ordering them to fill such prescriptions, saying it violates their religious beliefs.
