St. Louis, MO – A former NAVY Seal will become the new boss at St. Louis based Charter Communications.

Neil Smit was named president and CEO Tuesday morning. He takes over for Bob May, who has been interim CEO since January.

Smit comes to Charter from Time Warner, where was in charge of Internet access services for American Online, CompuServe and Netscape.

Smit will start his new job in about two weeks.

Charter's past troubles include three former executives who have admitted that they fudged numbers to make it look like Charter had more customers. Charter is the nation's fourth-largest cable TV company.

Charter lost more than $350 million in its most recent quarter, but Smit says he is confident the company's momentum has turned for the better.
