Report rates Missouri city roads among worst

By Maria Hickey, KWMU

St. Louis, MO. – A report released today finds St. Louis' major highways are the third roughest in the nation.

It's from The Road Information Program, or TRIP.

TRIP reports overuse and poor maintenance on St. Louis highways in 2003 cost drivers nearly $670 in repairs.

Kansas City topped the list averaging drivers $689 for road-related car repairs.

But Missouri Department of Transportation spokeswoman Linda Wilson says things have improved.

"Most importantly since the passage of Amendment 3 last November by the voters of Missouri, we're going to be able to make significant progress on bringing up our conditions," Wilson said.

Amendment Three prevents the state from diverting monies from the road fund for other programs.

Wilson says a smooth roads initiative should improve most major roadways in St. Louis by the end of 2007.

TRIP gets its data from the Federal Highway Administration.
