Residency Rules and the Police

By Matt Sepic, KWMU

St. Louis, MO – A quarter of the nation's police officers are bound by rules that require them to live in the city where they work.

That compares to 2000 census data that show nearly 54 million Americans commute to a job in a different municipality.

Police in Philadelphia, New Orleans, Milwaukee and elsewhere are fighting the residency requirements.

They hope their departments will follow St. Louis - the most recent big city to drop its residency rule for police.
