springfield, Ill. – The state of Illinois did better than expected in a program to collect tax money by offering amnesty to people who have been evading taxes.
The state's Revenue Department said on Tuesday that the amnesty generated $135 million. The original estimate was $100 million.
The program was for people and businesses who improperly use tax shelters to avoid paying what they owe. Nearly 700 taxpayers ended up paying in order to avoid any new penalties.
A broader amnesty in 2003 produced more than $500 million.
