Catholic Teachers Still Push for Union

By Maria Hickey, KWMU

St. Louis, MO. – A Catholic teachers' group is appealing to Rome to force the Archdiocese of St. Louis to allow them to unionize.

In June Archbishop Raymond Burke said the archdiocese would not recognize the Association of Catholic Elementary Educators, known as ACEE, or any other teachers' group.

ACEE appealed to the Congregation for Catholic Education in Rome. That board's decision came down last week in favor of the archbishop.

President Mary Chubb says the church traditionally has supported workers' rights and ACEE doesn't plan to give up.

"We continue to follow all the avenues we have because an injustice is occurring and the disregard for what the church has advocated and has never changed their position on for over a century is being abused," Chubb said.

Chubb says their next appeal is to the Apostolic Signatura in Rome; what she calls the Supreme Court of the Catholic Church.

A call to the Archdiocese for comment was not returned Thursday afternoon.
