Chicago – Republican U.S. Senate candidate Jack Ryan has not yet spoken with U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert, the leader some fellow Republicans say holds the greatest sway over Ryan's candidacy.
The speaker can't force Ryan off the ticket but can cut off funding and pressure him to leave. Hastert met Thursday with the Illinois' congressional delegation.
Ryan's campaign staff is denying rumors that Ryan is considering dropping out of the race.
Hastert chief spokesman says he thinks the speaker is going to withhold comment until he has a chance to talk to Ryan.
Ryan has been working to overcome allegations that he encouraged his former wife actress Jeri Ryan to have sex with him in front of strangers.
