Springfield, Ill – Illinois lawmakers convened a special session Thursday, but House members were immediately sent home.
Governor Rod Blagojevich ordered the special session hoping it would break a deadlock over the state budget.
But House Speaker Michael Madigan opposes the idea. He says there is no reason to pay lawmakers to show up in Springfield if there is not a budget agreement for them to consider.
He sent House members home and told them to come back Monday for a previously scheduled session day. The House will vote Monday on a temporary budget.
