Springfield, Ill. –

Illinois lawmakers were told to go home Tuesday just one day after failing to reach a deal on a new budget before Monday's deadline.

A few key budget negotiators will stay in Springfield and try to hammer out a deal. But the rest of the General Assembly is left wondering when the overtime session will end.

Democrats control the process in Springfield, but now Republican votes are needed to pass a spending plan.

That has GOP lawmakers sensing an opportunity, and their Democratic colleagues scratching their heads.

Illinois Public Radio's Sean Crawford prepared this report.
