St. Louis – For the second time in two months, St. Louis has become the launch site for a new coin honoring the Lewis and Clark expedition.
Wednesday, U.S. Mint director Henrietta Holsman Fore unveiled the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Silver Dollar at the Missouri History Museum.
She says one side of the coin depicts the two explorers, while the other shows a field of stars, two feathers and the Jefferson Peace Medal.
"The feathers symbolize the native American cultures touched by the Corps of Discovery expedition, and the 17 stars that complete the reverse represent the number of states in the Union when the expedition was begun in 1804," Fore said.
The Jefferson Peace Medal shows two clasped hands. Lewis and Clark gave copies of the medal to native tribes as a token of goodwill.
