St. Louis, MO – State Senator Maida Coleman (D-St. Louis) testified Tuesday in Jefferson City for a measure that would establish a way for people to recall school board members in Missouri.
The St. Louis Democrat says the effort is not aimed at any current school board member in the state.
The legislation would allow for recall questions on the ballot if enough petition signatures are gathered. That number would be 25% of the number of people who voted in the most recent school board election in that district.
If the recall effort failed on Election Day, that school board member would be immune from recall for the rest of his or her term.
"This bill puts school board members on notice that if they are not performing in a way that is acceptable to the community, they can be recalled," Coleman said in a statement.
The committee hearing the proposal did not vote on it.
The measure is Senate Bill 922 (SB 922). To read the text of the legislation, click here.
