Milwaukee, WI – St. Louis Lambert Airport will be one of four airports to get new technology this year aimed at improving safety on the ground.
Transportation Secretary Norm Mineta made that announcement in Milwaukee Monday. The ASDE-X (Airport Surface Detection Equipment Model-X) system has been running there since December.
It creates a complete, up-to-the-minute map of all ground operations. Controllers can use it to spot potential collisions, especially at night or during bad weather.
Orlando, Charlotte, N.C. and Providence, R.I. are the other airports who will get the ASDE-X system. There are plans to add the technology at 12 more airports in Fiscal Year 2005.
Milwaukee has another technology called Standard Terminal Automation Replacement System (STARS), which is planned for 16 airpots in the next two years. STARS is new, digital color radar technology.
