Carbondale, IL – Simon, a 1988 presidential candidate, died December 9. Massachusetts Democratic Sen. Ted Kennedy compared Simon to his own brother, former U.S. Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy.
Kennedy told the crowd that Simon had moral courage in abundance. He said Simon couldn't have cared less about political games, which is why he was successful in politics:
"How do you say goodbye to such a wonderful friend; who was such an inspiring and principled example...and who was also your favorite teacher too?" Kennedy said.
"In another era, he would have been a founding father...he was that good."
Simon died of complications following heart surgery
