Edwardsville, ILL. – An Edwardsville alderman was jailed in East St. Louis Sunday; he's expected to face drug charges.
East St. Louis Police Chief Ronald Matthews says the charges will likely be for possession of a controlled substance and fleeing and eluding police.
Matthews declined to identify the suspect pending charges, but police did say the man is a law enforcement official. That's led media to conclude the man is Herb Clay, who is a probation officer.
Police say the suspect was seen running a stop sign Saturday afternoon by several East St. Louis narcotics agents who were
working a special detail. They say he refused to stop, and shouted "I am one of you!"
A ten-minute high-speed chase then ensued.
After police stopped the suspect's car, he reportedly refused to follow commands. Officers used a Taser gun to subdue him and get handcuffs on him. They also said they seized cocaine from the suspect, who tried to eat it after he removed it from his pocket.
