St. Louis County Woman With West Nile Virus Dies

By AP/KWMU

St. Louis, MO – An 83-year-old north Saint Louis County woman is the second Missourian to die this year after contracting West Nile virus.

The woman's name was not released. She died September 14th after a brief hospital stay. The woman suffered from other illnesses, so officials stopped short of saying she died of West Nile.

The woman was the second Missourian to die this year after contracting the mosquito-borne disease. In August, an 82-year-old
St. Louis man died.

Last year, seven Missouri deaths were connected to West Nile. State health officials say West Nile cases overall are down in Missouri this year.

So far, 28 human cases have been confirmed statewide. Last year, 98 cases had been reported through mid-September on the way to 168 cases for the year.
