East St. Louis, Ill. – Students in East St. Louis returned to school Wednesday after teachers there approved a new one-year contract. They had gone on strike the previous day.
The agreement calls for a 3% pay increase, while health insurance benefits will stay the same. Union president Peggy LeCompte told the Belleville News-Democrat that while teachers may not have all that they should, their first job is to teach.
It was the first strike at the district since 1997.
