St. Louis, MO – The Cardinals beat the Braves 3-2 Sunday night, thanks to back-to-back homers in the eighth from Eduardo Perez and Albert Pujols.
But a play in the fifth inning made history. Cards' pitcher Woody Williams hit into just the 12th unassisted triple play in baseball history.
With runners on first and second, Braves Shortstop Rafael Furcal caught a line drive, stepped on second base to retire the runner who had jumped off second, then tagged out Orlando Palmeiro, who was running from first.
It was the first unassisted triple play in the majors since Oakland second baseman Randy Velarde did it against the New York Yankees on May 29, 2000. It was also the first in Atlanta history.
