IL Gains Population Despite 1M People Leaving

Chicago, ILL. – New census figures show about one million people left Illinois between 1995 and 2000. Most of them went to Wisconsin or Indiana, but overall the state's population increased during that time. It now has a population of about 12.4 million, up from 12 million.

Also, about 665,000 people moved into Illinois from other states during that period.

Nearly 85,000 moved away to Indiana; just more than 80,000 moved to Wisconsin.

Although Illinois lost 342,600 people to other states, it still grew as a whole because of foreigners. Immigration from outside the United States to Illinois totaled 353,800 between 1995 and 2000.

Because of that, and childbirth, the state's population grew.
