Survey Suggests Thousands of School Layoffs Possible

By AP/KWMU

Jefferson City, MO. – A new survey indicates public schools in Missouri could lose more than 3,400 jobs under budget cuts approved by lawmakers.

The Missouri Association of School Administrators released the survey in advance of a special legislative session that begins Monday.

The public school budget has about $163 million less in it than this fiscal year's budget. Superintendents from more than half of the state's 524 school districts responded to the survey.

Overall, the public school budget has about $2 billion in basic aid.

The survey finds the cuts could end the jobs of 2,000 certified school staff, such as teachers, counselors or administrators.

Also lost could be nearly 1,400 non-certified employees, such as school custodians, cafeteria workers and bus drivers.
