Jefferson City, MO – The Missouri Supreme Court Tuesday heard arguments over whether suing someone for breaking up a marriage is legal.
The case is of Katherine Helsel of St. Joseph, who sued and won $75,000 from another woman who broke up her marriage.
The defendant, Sivi Noellsch, is asking the court to overturn the law. She says the law comes from a time when a man's wife was considered his property.
But Helsel says the law is an incentive to preserve the sanctity of marriage.
Justices did not indicate when they will rule on the matter.
