Jefferson City, MO – Missouri's state Senate has sent Governor Holden a measure that would limit amount of money companies named in tobacco lawsuits would have to put into a bond when appealing a verdict.
The legislation was prompted by an Illinois case, where Philip Morris was ordered to post a $12 billion appeal bond.
In Missouri, appeal bonds in tobacco litigation would be capped at $50 million.
Missouri is expected to receive about $4.5 billion from the tobacco settlement. Supporters of the legislation says the goal is to protect that tobacco revenue.
