Missouri Families Seek More Testing at Birth

By AP/KWMU

St. Louis, MO – Missouri families affected by genetic disorders are seeking funding for expanded newborn screenings.

Lack of funds halted a law passed in June, 2001 guaranteeing seven new tests. Families met yesterday in St. Louis with The Illinois-based Jacob Foundation. This year Illinois added screening for 28 disorders.

Missouri's budget could not support the program, which would cost about $3.3 million dollars a year. The families are asking hospitals for expanded screening through private contractors until state funding comes through.

Fifteen states, including Missouri, screen for five or fewer diseases a day after birth.
