This article first appeared in the St. Louis Beacon, Nov. 14, 2011 - One of the things that intrigues us on Monday's schedule for the St. Louis International Film Festival is the collection of Maurice Sendak shorts shown at the St. County Library headquarters. It's part of the "In the Nutshell" exhibit that can be found at 1640 South Lindbergh.
Note: The locally produced film, "23 Minutes To Sunrise," will be shown as a "work in progress" at 7 p.m. Nov 14, at the Tivoli Theater.
The film stars Eric Roberts, Nia Peeples, Dingani Beza and Bob Zany, and was shot almost entirely in Sauget. The film is directed by Jay Kanzler, who co-wrote the screenplay with another St. Louisan, Patrick Pinkston.
As a work in progress, the film is approximately 95 percent complete, with only a few minor scenes remaining to be shot. Kanzler looks forward to having an audience see and critique the film at this stage of the process. "It gives all of us a chance to hear directly from the audience what works well, and maybe what doesn't work as well." According to Kanzler, "We'll take all of their feedback into the editing room with us to complete the film."
