The Lens: The high costs of remakes

This article first appeared in the St. Louis Beacon, Oct. 12, 2009 - Ransom amount requested in the 1974 film (and 1973 novel) "The Taking of Pelham One Two Three": $1,000,000.00

Ransom amount in the 1998 made-for-TV version: $5,000,000.00

Ransom amount in the 2009 version: $10,000,000.01

Adjusted for inflation, Robert Shaw's original 1974 request would still be less than half of what John Travolta wants in the new version. Why have today's subway hijackers become so greedy?
