The Lens: Finding JLG in the USA

This article first appeared in the St. Louis Beacon, March 25, 2009 - The annual "Film Issue" of The Believer, the occasionally engaging if somewhat irritating literary arm of the McSweeney's empire, hit newsstands with a special feature not to be missed.

In addition to articles about Jonas Mekas, "The Exorcist," John Sayles, Julie Delpy, Guillermo del Toro and Polish movie posters, the magazine features "JLG in USA," a DVD with roughly three hours of footage documenting various American visits by Jean-Luc Godard in the 1960s and '70s.

Included on the disc are home movies, two documentaries from his most politicized period (1968-72) and a surprisingly incisive two-part interview (once you get past the inevitable "Why do the French love Jerry Lewis?" line of questioning) from "The Dick Cavett Show" circa 1980.

The Lens is the blog of Cinema St. Louis, hosted by the Beacon.
